Not many campuses utilize garbage as a learning opportunity. However, many schools should. Students at Ascension are able to dump food waste into a composting bin located on site and watch the process of it enriching our soils.
For months, students collect and compost everything from banana peels, vegetables, and even fruit rinds from the fruit they harvest at the garden classroom. They learn about what happens to their leftovers after they are done with lunch. The older classes are given miniature composting bins of their own to manage and observe.
The students learn about the energy cycling of organic matter in the compost and the changes which occur over time. They are encouraged to journal observations using what they see, smell, and feel. Through collaboration, the students investigate about decomposition and develop scientific conclusions.
