IFTA, or the International Fuel Tax Agreement, is a cooperative agreement among the lower 48 states and Canada, which allows commercial carriers to average out their fuel and mileage to determine the quarterly tax liability.
Similarly, the IRP, or the International Registration Plan is a reciprocity agreement between the contiguous 48 states and Canada. It eases the process for apportioning payments of the registration fees carriers are required to pay based on their total distances they operate between jurisdictions every quarter.
To apply for an IFTA and IRP you must complete all of the attached forms IFTA application, IRP application, POA, Sales Tax Exemption, and Owners Authorization to Lessee. You will also be required to submit a 2290 form, front and back copy of title or MOS, title application and a copy of the tractor lease agreement. All documents have to be submitted prior to application being submitted. There is a onetime fee for this service. This fee covers all state fees for cab cards, apportioned plates, title registration, IFTA licenses.
