Pedal For Purple

A Virtual Marathon to fund Epilepsy Research

What is Pedal For Purple?

Pedal For Purple is a virtual marathon in support of Epilepsy Canada. For our inaugural marathon, our goal is to raise $5000 for Epilepsy Research. For every kilometre you cycle (or run/walk) between March 1st and March 26th, you donate $10.

What Is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a debilitating neurological disorder characterized by repeated seizures of various types and severity. Seizures occur when abnormal electric signals from the brain change the way the body functions.

Contrary to popular belief, there are many different types of Epilepsy. Seizure types are grouped into 2 main categories: Generalized Seizures and Focal Seizures.

“Epilepsy is the second leading cause of death from a neurological condition.”

Epilepsy Statistics

Around 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy, making it one of the most common neurological diseases globally.

About 300,000 Canadians (1% of the population) are affected by Epilepsy. 60% of new patients are young children or senior citizens.

Each year, 1 in 2000 is diagnosed with epilepsy. Each day in Canada, an average of 38 people learn that they have epilepsy.

60% of new patients are young children or senior citizens.

The National Institutes of Health (U.S.) spends more than $30 billion on medical research every year, less than half of a percent goes to epilepsy.

It is estimated that up to 70% of people living with epilepsy could live seizure- free if properly diagnosed and treated.

More people live with Epilepsy than Autism Spectrum Disorders, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Cerebral Palsy combined.

One-third of people with Epilepsy live with uncontrollable seizures because no available treatment works for them.
