In April 2022, I did a 3 day bikepacking trip in Slovenia. If you have a perfect (long) weekend getaway in mind, this is it.
The day before starting, I arrived in Trieste... where should I start? Love the city, vibrant. I spent the night with a friend, walking around the city, drinking spritz... what else can you ask? So, off to a good start.
I was lucky enough to get good and warm weather, it is a good time of the year to ride in this part of Europe. Wind can be quite tough and it was during the first day, but besides that no further remarks. The roads were always good, and the car drivers were respectful. Slovenia is a great country for cycling... no wonder 🩷💛❤️.
For this trip, during the night I stayed in hostels or Airbnbs. They are relatively cheap and you can find good accommodation also when you ride in the part of the country with mountains, as they are used to get tourists coming to do various sports.
Few stats from the trip:
309 km
3976 m ↗
14.5 h
3 days
I did this bike trip with my Cannondale Caad 10. The bike runs Shimano Ultegra 11 speed, the crankset is a FSA SLK 52-36, and the cassette was 11-32. The wheelset was a set Vision Team 30, with 25 mm tires. Fast bike setup for a short bikepacking trip worked just fine.
I used Topeak bags: a 15 L saddle bag, a 6 L top tube bag, plus a 1 L bag on the top of the top tube and another bag next to the stem from Decathlon. More than enough space for this short trip.
Back then I did not have a Garmin computer and used the watch, which by the way works great.
Beautiful ride from Trieste to the capital, Ljubljana. nice countryside road with few traffic. The only downside was: 96 km of block headwind.
This was day was probably one of my best day ever on the bike. The road and the scenery were beautiful, starting from Ljubliana then reaching the Triglav National Park. The day would have already been good
Something made the day special though. I was riding through Kranj, 30 km outside Ljubljana, when I encoutered road closure. After some complaining and checking the maps, I saw a bee coming from afar, on a shining yellow Cervelo S5. I could not believe what I was seeing so my first question was to him: "are you Primoz?". He laughed at me and said yes. He seemed a bit in a hurry, as matter of fact it was Easter day morning. I asked him a photo and then pedaled with him for 1 km on a road to go around the road closure. Finally, I was inevitably dropped... because I had bike bags, of course. What a day.
I spent the night in an Airbnb run by an old lady that cooked dinner for me. She was really kind. Then the next day I rolled back to Trieste. If you wonder why the gpx does not end in Trieste, the reason is that I finished the ride in a Osmize outside Trieste, local lovely bar where you can drink and eat, in this order. There is a lot more than that, but you just have to try!
