Dr. Mathews Wakhungu is a cultural and design anthropologist and a research principal at KDI. Before joining KDI, he completed his PhD in applied anthropology at the University of South Florida and spent seven years working in South Florida, focusing on infrastructure and environmental justice. Following his PhD, he engaged in research consulting in Kenya. His research interests center on working with under-resourced and historically marginalized communities in areas such as Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), disaster and risk management, and the intersection of climate and health. At KDI, Mathews leads the research team—recently registered as a Research Institute—through participatory action research aimed at supporting urban planning, design, and advocacy.
