A long time ago, western mountains were rarely explored by adventures because of their steepness. People also liked to call this place the Celestial Mountains or Tien Shan mountain range, which means that these huge mountains could connect heaven and earth. There was one kind of mysterious creature called Hundun (Dijiang) who lived in this area.
Few people could see them, but we could describe what they look like in just a few words. Hundun was one kind of divine bird that looked like a yellow sack with an aura of scarlet. Adventurers described them as bright red. They had six legs and four wings, but they had no eyes or facial features. They were very smart and could speak the human language. They were also fond of singing and dancing. Besides, people said, "Even though they look lovely, this creature actually represents fierce and disorder. They advocate destruction."
One day, a Hundun traveled to the intersection between the western and southern mountains, and he found the Peach Blossom Paradise. He always heard that this was a disgusting place from his clansmen. However, there was such a beautiful place in his view: this little village full peach blossom trees , he could even smell the sweetness of peach blossoms when he stood on the hill. So, he decided to see why all his clansmen does not like this place.
As he went into the village, the villagers felt like this visitor was spying on them. They asked, "Who are you? Could we know your name?"
He said, "My name is Jingqing Qi, I am a Hundun."
Although the villagers never saw a creature looks like that, they still welcomed him. They prepared foods and wine to treat him. They showed peace, friendliness, and kindness to him. Nevertheless, Jingqing Qi did not like all these things, and now, he realized why his clansman said that here was a disgusting place. He was taught how to fight and how to create chaos when he was born. In his hometown, different Hundun would fight with each other and decided who was the most powerful one. These villagers' behavior made him feel uncomfortable to the point that he was angry. He wanted to do something that showed his nature: he wanted to destroy.
Suddenly, just as he prepared to start destroying, melodious singing spread from the village, and the sound soothed his inner anger. After a while, he met the head of the village. At the invitation of the chief, they moved to a quiet room.
The chief said, "Nice to meet you, Jingqing Qi, why did you came here?"
Jingqing said, "I just traveled to here. Everything here made me feel irritable."
The chief smiled and answered, "I know you prefer disorder and being disobedient. I can't deny that they are powerful, and they also make you feel powerful."
Jingqing frowned and felt impatient, "Then you should know I don't like to talk like this."
The chief laughed, "Okay, then the last thing that I want to say is about your name. Do you know that your name means serenity and quiet in human language?"
Jingqing was surprised. "What? That's impossible. Our patriarch gave me this name. How could my name mean serenity or quiet?"
The chief answered, "Because everything needs peace to survive, even for the most powerful creatures in the world. Chaos and disobedience would only bring conflict. However, the conflict would never bring tolerance and prosperity."
Jingqing contemplated these words and asked, "You mean that my patriarch wants me to bring changes to my group?"
The chief said, "At least you can try."
Author's Note:
In this story, I tried to talk about why creatures always need peace. At the beginning of the story, I wrote some background information about Hundun since this creature is actually very abstract for me. In order to show this character, I prefer to call Jingqing "him" instead of "it". I believe that personification would endow him with more emotion, and also, it is easier for readers to understand. Usually, I like to connect reality with my story. We still could not say today's world is totally peaceful. Maybe peace is just a dream for humanity, even though we know that chaos and disobedience could not lead us to move forward.
Then, you may find that I do not put elegant descriptions about the environments in the Peach Blossom Paradise in this story, and that is because I want to focus more on the thinking. In my view, that would also be one of the reasons that those myths and folklores could be sung for thousands of years. This storybook would be a chance for me to show my position on different issues. I hope you enjoyed reading it!
