Internships are open to juniors and seniors, as well as graduate students.
Most students enroll in ENG 486 Internship in Written Expression when they do their internship. Doing so allows them to earn college credit for their work. Starting Fall 2019, graduate students may also sign up for Internships using ENGL 586.
The department requires that the internship involve practical experience in writing, editing, researching, and/or publishing.
Students may use course number 486 or 586 for between 1 and 3 credits. Most commonly, 3 credits are awarded. Generally, 160 hours of work are required (average 10 hours per week through the 16-week semester).
ENG 486 and 586 require that a faculty member supervise the internship at an outside organization.
You communicate with the faculty member on a regular basis about your internship duties, develop a portfolio of your work, and may be required to do writing assignments assessing the internship.
The faculty member must have contact with the internship place of business, as well. If this organization has never worked with a student intern from ESU before, an Internship Agreement must be completed and signed.
The faculty member will work out all details of the internship with you and the client before you begin the work.
