Why did we establish a civic association? During our university years, we became increasingly aware of the lack of support for talented students in the field of natural sciences in Slovakia. From our position, we have not been able to influence the absence of adequate direct support for gifted high school students by state authorities, which we ourselves have previously witnessed. After years of discussions, we realized that we could use our often-international experience and fill this vacuum on our own, hoping to at least stimulate a discussion about what such support and investment in Slovakia's future should look like. We therefore decided to establish the Prievidza Chemical Society as an official platform to support active participants of the Chemistry Olympiad. As it turned out later, we took a small but very important step forward, which brought with it the hope that we would not be left alone in this step in the future. We believe that our activity should not replace, but complement the support of education of young people in Slovakia. We develop all our activities with this motivation.
Why PChS? This name for the designation of our civic association originated spontaneously during a funny summer occasion with group of friends around bonfire in the village of Cígeľ near Prievidza in 2009, because we are all former participants of Chemistry Olympiad raised by the Vavrinec Benedikt Nedožerský Grammar School in Prievidza. It took several more years before one of us, Pavol Ondrisek, decided to act. At the end of December 2015, he drafted the first version of the PChS statutes, convened a preparatory committee (Pavol Ondrisek, Juraj Malinčík and Peter Belai) and submitted a proposal for registration of the c.a. Prievidza Chemical Society to the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic. The answer did not take long. In January 2016, the Articles of Association were approved and in February we were assigned an ID number. During the year, we added a logo, established a bank account and organized the first general meeting, which took place at traditional meeting on St. Stefan day in Bojnice. Subsequently, the PChS Council (currently Michal Juríček, Pavol Ondrisek and Tomáš Šolomek) was elected, which to this day takes care of fulfilling the goals of PChS in cooperation with the remaining members of the association.
