WCS is a slotted dance, leaders lead the followers up and down the slot while they (leader) step on and off the rails to get out of the way of the follower.
The dance's basic 6 count pattern can be counted like:
1, 2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6 (most often counted like this) or,
1, 2, triple step, triple step or,
Slow, slow, quick, quick , slow, quick, quick, slow
Basic Moves consist of 6 and 8 count patterns
• 6 count patterns consist of …Sugar Push, Tuck Turn, Left side pass, Right side pass(aka under arm turn)
• 8 count pattern is called a Whip
All other patterns build off of these Basic Moves. Once you master these, you will be able to do most other moves.
• Remember the acronym “CASL” it represents the 4 elements of WCS..… C=Connection , A=Anchor, S=Stretch ,L=Lead
Connection...
• Leaders, pistol grip. Do not pinch followers fingers with your thumbs! • Followers…cup fingers over leaders fingers, don’t squeeze but maintain a gentle connection.
Anchor…happens at the end of every pattern on the 5 & 6 count. Leaders weight is on their Right Foot. Followers are weighted on their Left Foot, stretching away from your partner.
Stretch…while in their anchor, partners gently stretch away from one another to create a bungee effect when they start the next pattern.
Lead…
• Leaders step back on left foot to initiate followers to step forward…lead with body, not arms. Remember, you’re giving the follower “a request” not a “command”
• Followers …wait for the leader to initiate the move. Pay attention to your partner, be ready when they lead you on the first count. Step out on right foot. Keep a good connection.
