I used these strategies to keep kids engaged with lessons and so they would stay distracted from being bad. Typically we avoided passing materials out instead we had 1 people come up from each table to get supplies. But when we did have dead time random questions will save you everytime.

My Spanish teacher, Mrs.Tiboni, consistently has kept me engaged in her class. She teaches the upper level Spanish courses in my school, due to that I have had her as my teacher for 3 years. Her teaching style changes the older the student gets along with the level of Spanish they are in. My first year in her class she was strict, and gave consistent work pushing through lessons quickly. Even if the lessons were quick he made sure every person in the room was understanding the topic to some level, never allowing someone to be completely lost on the lesson. Her strict nature didn´t make us fear her, it was a respect thing where she treated us like students and enjoyed us to complete work. Over the past 2 years in her class in Spanish 4 and 5, she has given me countless lessons about Spanish culture and language, along with college and future advice. Tiboni is a teacher that has remained a consistent role model to me and my friends throughout high school. She is a teacher that is well-rounded literally forcing information at you constantly but making sure you understand it.
