I feel as though most high schoolers have interacted with at least one neurodivergent person. In my experience I have learned how kind they can be, and how they view the world. Many of the individuals that I have interacted with have autism. One thing that I have noticed is have a special interest, I know people with interests from cartoons, music, to even swords. This interest isn't always a thing that is unique, it is just something a person will know a lot about and likely talk a lot about. I have learned that learning more about the things that are their interests makes it a lot easier to get to know them and hold conversations. Another thing I have noticed is a lack of knowledge on social cues. This isn't something that can necessary be taught, but under most circumstances many people with autism struggle to understand the way a neurotypical person's brain works. So things like learning when to answer questions, reading a room or understanding vocal tone can be something a person who is neurodivergent may struggle with. So in truth the best way to work around this is to be blunt and honest when exampling things. This experiances have helped me see the way others think, allowing a different perspective and more open mind from a classroom to the real world.
