Summer in Sydney can be beautiful, but it also brings scorching days that can be dangerous for our furry friends. Dogs can overheat much faster than humans, so it’s important to plan and know how to keep them cool, comfortable, and safe.
Here are my top tips for helping your dog enjoy the Aussie summer without the risks.
Avoid the hottest part of the day (usually 10 am–4 pm).
Aim for early morning or evening walks
Always test the pavement with your hand-it shouldn't be too hot for your dogs paws
Dogs lose a lot of moisture when they pant.
Always have fresh, cool water available
Take a collapsible bowl and water with you on walks
Add ice cubes for extra cooling
If your dog spends time outside, make sure they have:
Access to shaded areas all day
A cool, well-ventilated space
An option to come inside where it's cooler
Even on mild days, cars can heat up incredibly fast.
Temperatures can soar in minutes
Cracking windows is NOT enough
Always take your dog with you or leave them at home
Know the warning signs so you can act quickly.
Excessive panting
Drooling
Weakness or staggering
Vomiting or collapse
If you see these signs, cool your dog immediately (cool, not icy water) and call your vet.
Fun ways to help them chill out!
Frozen dog-safe treats (like mashed banana or yoghurt in ice cube trays).
Ice cubes in the water bowl.
Frozen KONGs or lick mats.
Many dogs love splashing around.
Supervise them at all times.
Make sure the pool is shallow and on a non-slip surface.
Regular brushing removes undercoat and helps airflow.
Shaving double-coated breeds can make heat protection worse.
Ask a groomer for advice tailored to your dog.
On extreme heat days, skip the big walks.
Do short toilet breaks only
Try indoor games and training for mental stimulation.
Give them a comfy, cool spot to nap
Store-bought cooling mats work well
A damp towel on the floor can help them stay cool.
Always supervise to make sure they’re comfy.
Sydney summers can be harsh, but with a little planning, you can keep your dog safe, happy, and cool. If you’re booking a walk or overnight stay with me, I always adjust activities for the weather to make sure your dog is comfortable.
