I aim to tailor lessons to the individual. Some want to learn to strum along with their favourite songs, some need "grades" in order to study music at college. Some aim to be songwriters, some want to be jazzers, bluesmen, etc. etc.
Most come armed with musical knowledge that they don't even know they possess. It's amazing that people who claim to know nothing about music "instinctively" know when something is wrong! That's a clear sign that you know more about music than you think!
In all the time I've been teaching I've come across very few people who were actually "tone deaf", or who had no sense of rhythm.
One of my pupils is an avid climber (big mountains!), and has damaged his hands so badly that certain guitar positions are just not feasible. So we find alternatives, and he can make music.
To cut a long story short (whoops, too late!), I believe that almost anyone can learn to play.
