Simply put, a co-crystal is a when two (or more) different molecular or ionic compounds come together to create a new crystalline structure. My work focuses on looking at the 2D crystal formations, so that we get a single sheet of a two ingredient co-crystal. Oftentimes, these co-crystals have interesting properties that are quite different from either of their individual ingredients.

A co-crystal is a lot like making a recipe from ingredients. Like the illustration above, you mix different ingredients together to get something entirely new that looks and tastes different. In our recipe here coming out of the salt shaker is croconic acid, and coming out of the box in benzimidazole. In the bowl you can see the new co-crystal structure they make, and how it's different compared to the ingredients that came together to make it.
