I grew up in South East San Diego, Ca. Although San Diego is known for its beautiful beaches and outstanding weather, there are some inner-city communities where crime rates are high and student achievement is very low. My community was one of them. My experiences as a student, faced with everyday challenges that the community presented on a daily basis, has given me a unique perspective on what it takes for students living in low socioeconomic communities to be successful.
My teaching philosophy is guided by two main principles; Collaboration and classroom management. I believe that collaboration should include everyone that has a connection to our learning environment (teacher, students, parents, community). Classroom management is equally valued. Students should have the freedom to express how they want to learn and the opportunity to create rules to sustain a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.
Collaboration is important as it relates to creating a productive learning experience no matter where students are from. However, within low socioeconomic communities it is essential. Creating strong relationships with families will ensure the support and trust that is vital to student learning and achievement. My students know that I am constantly communicating with home and that helps to reduce unwanted behaviors and promotes productivity.
Classroom Management to me is more than just rules and regulations. It is knowing each one of my students individually, their strengths and areas that need to be strengthened. Knowledge of my students will allow me to set them up for success. I do acknowledge the value in having a disciplined classroom. Therefore, from the very first day I establish clear boundaries and set certain expectations for my class. Having keen knowledge of each of my students along with setting boundaries and expectations creates the learning environment that I want for my classroom.
