Synopsis
Prior to his current post, Paul has held academic positions at esteemed institutions such as Cranfield (Defence Academy of the UK), Sydney (USYD), and South Korea (KAIST). He was trained originally as a data scientist with degrees from the University of Sydney, Australia, and has since published over one hundred papers in prestigious journals and conferences. He has also overseen over US$3 million in project funding as the PI and has received various national and international awards for his work in advanced data analytics, machine learning, and decision support systems research. These include IEEE Leadership Award, Rozetta Award, and Samsung Award.
Paul currently serves as an Editor for Nature (Scientific Reports) (Q1), and ACM Computing Surveys (Q1). He has previously served as an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Computing (Q1), IEEE COMML (Q1) and IEEE Access (Q1). He is also affiliated with the University of Sydney and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) as a Visiting Professor. Paul is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a Fellow of HEA.
As the Founder and Chair of BIDA+'s Threat Intelligence Lab, Paul leads a team dedicated to advancing a cutting-edge security research environment, focusing on both reactive detection and proactive prediction of threats. His team has pioneered big data-driven forecasting methods to support strategic decision-making [article1, article2]. This groundbreaking work, recognised as the first long-term proactive approach, has recently been funded by NATO.
Building on his seminal work, Paul’s research is advancing a new frontier in big data and machine learning-driven technology forecasting, addressing the limitations of traditional, expert-based predictions. His data-driven approaches unlocking new possibilities for predictive analytics across diverse industries. Currently, Paul is leading projects on GHP tech forecasting (in partnership with UoM and JNU) and healthcare tech forecasting (in collaboration with LSE, KCL, UCL Hospital, LSHTM and Hanyang Univ. Medicine), with a dual focus on value creation and value capture. These initiatives highlight both versatility and real-world impact of his work. By integrating cutting-edge predictive models and sophisticated analytics, Paul equips organisations to anticipate technological trends at macro and micro levels, empowering data-informed strategic decisions that drive sustainable growth and resilience.
Paul has supervised a number of PhD students to completion, and he welcomes inquiries about research degree (PhD/MPhil) and internship opportunities.
Consultancy
Paul recently launched a new business consultancy service for the Centre for Professional Development (CfPD) and BIDA+, called the AI and Data Analytics Clinic. He has published a blog with more information on this new venture.
