In one of his last interviews, John Lennon spoke of his admiration for the way in which McCartney remade himself in the wake of the Beatles' demise, forming a new group, and, against all odds, finding superstardom in a new and very different decade.

With Wings and as a solo act, McCartney blazed new trails during the 1970s, scoring a king's ransom of hits, while at the same time never shying away from taking chances. But I digress. The point is Paul McCartney had a brilliant second act. And even if his concerts tend to focus more on Beatles songs than solo hits or Wings material at this point, his post-Beatles output has held up amazingly, which brings us to one Beatlemaniac's countdown of the legendary bassist's 30 best post-Beatles singles. And by singles, I mean A-sides issued in the U.K. or the U.S. Album tracks are not included because the challenge would have gone from daunting to impossible if I'd been forced to factor in the album tracks. So let me just say two things here. "Junk" is amazing. And there's no news bad enough that a casual listen to "Monkberry Moon Delight" could not immediately make me smile.

Any number of the former Beatle's solo record picked up on the premise of the "Get Back" sessions, getting back to the roots that made McCartney such a classic rocker in the first place. This is among the most successful of those singles, having peaked at No. 10 here in the States and No. 5 in the U.K. despite being banned for sexually suggestive lyrics ("I want you to lie on the bed, get you ready for my polygon," which is an odd shape for that sort of thing). It also celebrates the act of getting hi, hi, hi and listening to bootleg records, one of which should be illegal.

Another scrappy blast of old-school rock and roll, it swaggers through the kind of riff Chuck Berry could have based another 20 classic singles on before McCartney grabs the mike to complain, "You're talkin' to me from the back of my car and I can't get nothin' right / And then you wonder why I stand at the bar day and night." Which is exactly why he's had enough. There's also an endearing monologue that's partly spoken, partly sung. The followup to "With a Little Luck," it had a little less luck on the pop charts, hitting No. 25 here in the States and No. 42 across the pond.

Like many of his earliest post-Beatles singles, it's as much a suite as an actual song, evolving as it goes along. The first 35 seconds or so are a conversation between the electric guitars and a fluttering keyboard. Then, McCartney checks in from his prison cell, lamenting the idea that he's "never seeing no one nice again like you, Mama." Your a good five sections in --- or maybe six -- before you hit the chorus hook, by which point he's apparently escaped his cell and picked up an acoustic guitar. This is classic McCartney and it sold accordingly, hitting No. 1 here in the States and No. 3 in the U.K.
