About me

I am a Full Professor of Managerial Accounting at the University of Tübingen, Department of Managerial Accounting. Since 2024, I also serve as Vice Dean and Dean of Studies of the School of Business and Economics.

My research lies at the intersection of managerial accounting and organizational economics. My main topics are performance management and management control, incentive and compensation schemes, executive compensation, and sustainability and ESG reporting: I study how firms design incentive and performance management systems, including bonus schemes, subjective performance evaluations, target agreements, and executive and ESG-linked compensation, and how these practices affect employee behavior, engagement, satisfaction, and firm performance. More generally, I am interested in the empirical evaluation of management practices. A second strand of my work uses field experiments to improve the availability of stem cell donors, in cooperation with DKMS, a leading stem cell registry. Methodologically, my work is rooted in applied microeconometrics and combines linked employer-employee data, administrative and firm-level data, firm and employee surveys, as well as lab and field experiments.

My work has been published in journals such as The Review of Financial Studies, The Economic Journal, the Journal of Labor Economics, the Journal of International Economics, Management Accounting Research, and the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization. I have been a Principal Investigator in the DFG Priority Program “The German Labour Market in a Globalised World” and am a co-founder of the Linked Personnel Panel (LPP), a representative linked employer-employee survey of German establishments. I regularly advise the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS), where I am a member of the Advisory Board for the research area “Quality of Work and Economic Success”.

My research is frequently covered in outlets such as the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Handelsblatt, Wirtschaftswoche, Controlling & Management, and Personalmagazin, which named me one of Germany's “Top40 in People Management” in 2025. I also regularly present my research at practitioner conferences organized by, for instance, Willis Towers Watson, Mercer, or Deutsche Gesellschaft für Personalführung (DGFP).
