The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) first created a set of national teaching standards in 1989, updated in 2016. Based on five core propositions, the standards articulate what teachers should know and be able to do to teach students effectively. The propositions are fundamental in establishing a vision for nationally recognized accomplished teaching.
