I'm a photographer, a paramedic, and a lifelong student of the Shroud of Turin. I write from experience, so if my stories come across as gritty, fast-paced, vivid, and full of adventure, it’s because that’s who I am. I’ve been there—on the water, deep in the woods, and out on the streets—treating the sick and injured, and holding the dying in my arms. Those moments etched themselves into my soul, leaving me with a deep calling to serve and a need to share. And so I write. The title above may say author, but I'm really just a simple guy with a heart full of stories waiting to be told. These are mine.

We watched and waited. At 12:00 noon the sky darkened. Not like it would in a total solar eclipse when the moon’s shadow passes over the sun. Not a deep reddish horizon on all sides with beautiful stars twinkling. It turned as dark as pitch, and as it did, pandemonium broke out. People screamed. Some loudly wept. I watched and waited quietly with my guard. It might have been a beautiful scene, but the darkness continued to deepen until becoming so complete and oppressive that I could feel its weight on my shoulders. So black I could not see my hand. I could hear the criminals crying for help, shifting restlessly on their crosses, but Jesus remained silent.

The Shroud of Turin is an ancient artifact believed by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. While studying at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara during the late 70's, my good friend Bill Hendricks and I served as research assistants for Professor Vernon Miller, Chief Scientific Photographer for the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP). Working closely with Miller and other members of the STURP team, including the founder, U.S. Air Force Captain John Jackson, we helped play a key role in several foundational studies—art history and the Shroud, the effects of direct bodily contact on image formation, image fluorescence, and mind-boggling computerized 3-D imaging technique that produced the life-like models we have of the Shroud today. I have lectured extensively on the trauma evident in the Shroud, with heavy emphasis on the profound suffering endured by the man seen on its fibers.
