Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."
The First Responders in your community do just that. They sacrifice comfort and safety to protect the lives of others, always waiting and always wondering when they will find themselves answering the next call. This book was written for them, but it applies to anyone who searches for courage and hope, struggles with a difficult relationship, or suffers pain or loss. Are you seeking a closer walk with God? Wondering what comes next? Answering the Call can help you find your way. It reveals the simple truth that Jesus Christ is Lord, and that to follow him is to find true meaning in life. Christ... the First Responder, is calling you now. Answering the Call is a collection of inspirational stories based on the author's experiences as a street paramedic in Durham, North Carolina. Each story includes an insightful application that offers the reader a glimpse into God's Word. Use it for your daily quiet time, as a guide for small group study, or simply to share with other paramedics and first responders.
An excerpt from Answering the Call
When I first saw her, I thought she was a ghost. She lay beneath a pile of bloody sheets, wrists opened by a crisscrossed pattern of lashes. With pasty skin and a fixed, unseeing gaze, she looked beyond help, a lost spirit in a living corpse drained of blood. Her name was Noel. She wanted to die.
I saw my partner's jaw drop when he opened the rear doors of the ambulance, for Noel was different. Her previously washed-out face appeared bright and pink. Her eyes looked focused and confident.
"What happened?" Kevin said, unlocking the stretcher and pulling it from the truck.
"I prayed," the young woman said, grabbing my hand, "and I know what I need to do now. I need to live. I need to tell other people about Jesus."
It's been over five years since that night, and I have not seen that patient since, but I know with certainty that she was transformed in the back of that ambulance, washed clean by the blood of the Lamb. And something else happened too . . . I was changed forever. For the first time in my life I understood the importance of boldness and saying his name (Jesus) without fear. There is no other name under Heaven whereby men must be saved. Do you know Jesus? Be bold, then, and just say it. Like me, you may be surprised by the power unleashed by His name.
At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue confess, "Jesus Christ is LORD." (Philippians 2:9-11)
A few Amazon Reviews:
"I bought this book with the intention of gifting it to my paramedic preceptor. He’s a brother in Christ who could use some encouragement to be in the Word. I started reading it and decided it was so good I had to have a copy for myself! I’m encouraged that this book with be a big blessing to him. I can’t wait to give it to him! Brother Pat, sounds like someone who truly loves the Lord. I’ve been an EMT for almost 4 years now. Not a lot of time under my belt but I started this journey with the Lord. I can hear the Lord in brother Pat’s experiences and makes me think of all the calls I’ve been on, especially during COVID. God was and is always so faithful. Amen."
"As someone who just entered the world of EMS and responded to a very hard call on my third shift this book helped me to cope and heal. During this time I was depressed, saddened and very discourage, but Patterson’s first hand experience gave me the message of hope I needed at the right time. The devotional were short, but hit very good points and the follow up questions gave a lot of reflection on the provided scriptures. This book also gives a different perspective and fresh look on popular scriptures. Definitely worth the read."
"A great devotional book, especially if you are a first responder. Great daily Bible readings with applicable life stories. If you have an EMT, firefighter or law enforcement in your life, share this great collection with them!"
