Phone and Email Zap

Thank you for taking action to free immigrant New Yorkers from ICE jails by helping to end New York's collaboration with ICE. Each page of this site has information about different targets. There are pages for New York State Assemblymembers, Senators, State Leadership, and Federal Electeds. It's strategically important to get the support of each of the representatives on these pages, and it makes a big difference for them to hear from constituents asking them to support DND!

There is also a page with targets to contact for individual release campaigns for New Yorkers currently incarcerated by ICE. Start out with what is manageable for you: pick one page, and call your representative (if applicable) or otherwise pick a target from that page at random, then call and email using the script. Even contacting one target helps! And if you feel up to it, you can do a second one after that, and so on.

Tips for Phone/Email Zaps

• If comfortable, always give a way for the person (whether over the phone or via email) to respond.
• If you live in the Assemblymember or Senator’s district, be sure to say so, so they know you are a constituent.  
• Tailored communications tend to generate more response than copy-pasted ones, but there are a lot of targets, so do what you can. 
• Send separate emails rather than CCing or BCCing. If you do need to attach multiple recipients to the same email, BCC is preferred to CC. 
• When making calls, try to modulate your approach based on who picks up → perhaps be more conversational and less confrontational if the person seems sympathetic and wants to help. Seize the moment to ask if they have suggestions for other contacts / points of entry.
• If it feels like the legislative staffers are rushing you, some tactics to get more concrete follow-up could include asking, When is a good time to follow up? If we wanted to schedule a meeting to discuss, who is the best person to reach out to schedule (and getting an e-mail address)?
