What is Parting Planner?
Think of it as project management for death in the family. From the program you will learn to identify goals (anything from preservation of wealth to inner peace); work within a timeline (ranging from short-term and immediate to long-term and eventual); manage resources (because things like legal aid, medical support, funerals, and estate taxes are not free); and create solutions for problems you might encounter.
But death. Is that not a dreadful topic?
If you are afraid of being sentimental and sad during the session, it’ll likely last for all of two minutes. Five, tops. After that, we buckle down to business. You’ll be preoccupied with all manner of administrative and planning details the rest of the time, all of which are meant to reduce the grief and aggravation you will encounter when a death does come.
Who should attend?
If you anticipate to be taking care of someone approaching or upon death, or their affairs after they pass, then this is for you.
Is it only for when there is a death anticipated?
Ideally not. The earlier anyone starts planning for a death, the better the decisions you can make. It hopefully saves you from unnecessarily bad and/or expensive decisions made in grief. But if you happen to be in urgent circumstances, then this helps you prioritize.
What if the people I want to prepare for or do the plan with don’t want to talk about it?
The workshop gives you the tools to figure some things out on your own. So that when the time comes, you still maintain a sense of control and can navigate through what needs to be done.
Is this the same as an estate planning workshop?
This program covers a wider scope of preparation and estate planning could be a next step if you identify it as a need. Your output here is what you’ll bring to a lawyer if you decide to pursue an estate plan.
How long is each workshop?
Usually 2 to 2 ½ hours. Actual length of time may vary depending on group size and the number of questions.
Can I do a plan for myself or does it have to be for someone else?
Many participants choose to do a plan for themselves. Either to save the families they will leave behind someday of the burden of handling their affairs or as practice for conversations to have with the people they’d like to do a plan for.
What options are available to join a workshop?
You can join a public session or book one for your family (or a group of friends); virtual and face-to-face programs are options. Please send a message to parting.planner@gmail.com to schedule a session or for additional inquiries.
