  1. The grouping of the Pious Women, who support and offer solace to Jesus’ mother Mary, who has fainted from the pain of seeing her Son crucified.

  2. Three Jews recognisable by their traditional headdresses. They also bear an expression of sadness and share in Mary’s pain.

  3. Here we see the Penitent Thief who repented of his crimes. His gaze is directed towards Jesus and Heaven; Jesus has saved him.

  4. A Roman Centurion also looks upon Jesus, clasping his hands as he has recognised Jesus as the Son of God, Saviour of Humankind.

  5. Next to the cross we see an individual with a bucket in one hand and a reed in the other. Atop the reed is affixed a sponge to offer drink to the dying Jesus.

  6. At the centre of the fresco is the Crucifix, Jesus Christ on the cross.

  7. Close to the large cross, the artist has placed Saint John, the youngest Apostle, recognisable by his halo.

  8. This is the Impenitent Thief, who did not repent and whose gaze is directed downward towards hell.

  9. The artist has included a series of Roman soldiers on foot and on horseback, with their typical banners and armour.

  10. Above Jesus’ cross is a pelican, who is feeding her young with her own blood, dying in order to save them. She reminds us that Jesus spilled his own blood to save his children.
