II. Diving into Phonics
2 hours
This course dives into all the phonics rules in depth, which we briefly discuss in Grasping the Method. Along with implementing a structured literacy lesson, it is vital that we understand the rules, sounds and patterns of the language. Potentially, you were never taught this before and educating yourself will help your student infinitely. We need to educate ourselves, so we can educate our children. The combination of both classes will leave you completely equipped and empowered to start with your child.
Here's what this session will provide...
how to teach EACH rule from the Scope & Sequence
provide a clear understanding of EACH rule in our language
how the rules and patterns will be woven into what you already learned in Grasping the Method
This course is not affiliated or accredited with the OG Academy, and does not provide formal certification.

Q: What exactly is included in the Resource Manual? (This is also what is included if you choose just to purchase the Digital Resources)
A: Everything you'll ever need to teach your child to read and spell! But to be more specific...
an OG lesson plan template
9 page Scope & Sequence that teaches the language in its entirety
All 6 Syllable types
All 7 Syllabication Patterns
9 Spelling Rules
55 Phonics Visual Teaching Aids(one for each skill in the Scope & Sequence)
180 Phoneme/Grapheme Cards
Red Word list - 82 irregular words
3 Levels of Decodable Passages - 108 different decodable stories
Blending Deck
2 Sound Maps (red & green words)
91 Word Lists that align with each skill/pattern in the Scope & Sequence
Q: When is the best time to take the HOR Course?
A: You can start using a structured literacy approach as soon as your child is "ready". This can vary from child to child. When you take the HOR Course you will take your child from basic letter sounds all the way to chapter books! Most parents are ready when their child has started to learn letters and sounds. This is the perfect launching point!
Your child doesn't need to know any letters or sounds, though. We will teach them both! It's a complete language based approach that will take your child the distance in their reading and spelling. From beginning to end. That's why we love a complete Scope & Sequence that teaches the entire language.
Q: How do I know if the Digital Resource Manual is a good fit for me?
A: This option is best for anyone who feels comfortable without a scripted program. If you are looking for resources, but flexibility to teach as needed, then it's a great fit for you. Teachers tend to have experience and background knowledge on teaching children to read. They may even already have some Phonics or OG training. Possibly, they just need all the resources to execute in their classroom.
If you are a parent interested in this option due to the price point, just know you will not be taught how to approach the language. You will have a really great toolbox to guide & direct you. The education is in the HOR course.
Q: If I purchase the Digital Resources Only and then decide I do want to add the course, can I?
A: Yes, you can. Look for - Upgrade to Education.
Q: Do I have to attend the virtual trainings live?
A: No. The course is self-paced. You will learn on your own schedule & leisure. The course videos are pre-recorded for accessibility. You will also have lifetime access to the course.
