My name is Danielle. I am 24 years old. I grew up and still live in a small town located north of Bernalillo, NM. I am a mom of a wonderful, sweet boy named Nicolas (Nico). My son just recently turned 6 years old. Our story of autism began a little over 3 years ago. When my son had to get put in preschool a little early due to him not really talking. His teachers and I would notice little stuff he would do such as: organize anything in a certain way, eat only a few specific foods, drink out of only one cup, and have a hard time playing with other kids his age. His teachers recommended that I should take him to UNM to get evaluated for Autism. We waited on a waitlist for a year and then they finally called us up for an evaluation. Nico was evaluated for 3 hours, and they did diagnose him with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and a developmental disability delay. It was a shock to us at first, but I was so eager to help my son that I made sure I got all the information I was needing. I was given brochures about places to get him help. I didn’t find much on support groups until I went on Facebook. Once I went on Facebook, I searched groups and I found one that was for families, friends or anyone who was willing to learn more about autism. Being in that group has helped me out so much with walking through this journey with my son.
