Based on my research on Jan Gelb and Paul Gauguin, it can be deduced that despite the different experiences each artist went through, changes in their environment can still illicit a similar shift in mediums in order to continue artistic expression. And even with the transition in mediums, are still able to hold certain parallels in their work, especially the concept of layering in printmaking/painting.
Gelb was able to demonstrate a shift in not only medium but also color when she left Atelier 17's printmaking studio for the natural environment of the dunes on the Peaked Hill Bars of Provincetown, MA; which can also be reflected in Gauguin's work as he traveled between the industrialized, heavily European-occupied France and the native-inhabited, primitive environment of Tahiti.
