The community of Petroto is situated in Thessaly, Central Greece. The village lies at a strategic crossroads between the plains of Trikala and Larissa. Nestled between the Neochoritis and Pineios rivers, the area has been a hub of activity from the Neolithic to medieval times. Petroto is accessible by bus and train (via Trikala) from Athens (4.5 hours) and Thessaloniki (2 hours).
The village offers a range of local amenities, including traditional tavernas serving Greek cuisine, grocery shops, a pharmacy, and cafés, most of which are located around the central village square.
Today, the elementary school of the village serves as the home base for our systematic excavations, located 2 km away, as well as for our interdisciplinary research activities.
