An interdisciplinary research and excavation project focused on the Prehistoric settlement of Petroto
Are you ready to gain world-class field experience in the heart of Greece?
The Petroto Archaeological & Palaeoenvironmental Programme (PAPP) is now accepting participants for the 2026 season. This is your chance to contribute to the only systematic excavation of a Prehistoric settlement in the Thessaly region.
What sets this programme apart?
Unrivaled Scope: Explore evidence of human life through material remains dating from the Early to the Late Helladic (3200–1100 BC).
Environmental Field Operations: Excavations are paralleled with the opportunity to participate in the on-site recovery of environmental remains through heavy and fine residue sorting alongside flotation processing of bulk soil samples.
'Science-First' Approach: Laboratory-based application of advanced protocols through the sampling, identification, and analysis of artefacts recovered during our active excavations.
Specialized Education: Our seminars bridge the gap between discovery and data. You will attend expert-led seminars in osteoarchaeology, zooarchaeology, lithics, archaeobotany, pottery analysis, and more.
Inclusive Training: We welcome participants from all backgrounds and countries. No prior experience is required—only a genuine passion for the past.
Excursions & Culture: Explore the monuments, the nature, the sea, and the local products such as wine during weekend excursions in the wider region of Thessaly. Learn how to cook and dance like a local Greek!
Community: Whether it is a Sunday evening feast or a spontaneous local celebration, you will experience the authentic warmth of Thessalian hospitality.
We believe that great archaeology comes from diverse perspectives. Whether you are a seasoned student or a passionate newcomer, PAPP 2026 provides an immersive environment where hands-on trench work meets deep cultural immersion.
