WELCOME TO THE 7th PAN AMERICAN PLANT MEMBRANE BIOLOGY WORKSHOP
The Organizing Committee is pleased to welcome you to Yucatan, Mexico, for the 7th Pan American Plant Membrane Biology Workshop.
The workshop will take place in Telchac, that in maya language means “The Necessary Rain”, and that it is very close to Merida, the capital of the Yucatan State. Merida, “The White City” was founded by Francisco de Montejo in 1542 over the ruins of T-hò, which means “Place of the five hills”, an ancient Mayan settlement, that reminded them the remains of Merida in Extremadura, Spain. During the colonial period, stones taken from the Mayan temples were used to build several churches and convents that can be seen in Merida today. Merida, located in the Yucatan peninsula, is also close to gorgeous archeological and beautiful natural places. In 2019, Mérida was designated as a Creative Gastronomic City by UNESCO.
Twenty years ago, the 1st Pan American Plant Membrane Biology Workshop was held in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Then, every three years has taken place in successive venues: South Padre Island, Puebla, Asilomar, San Pedro de Atacama and Vancouver (2018). Unfortunately, due to the pandemics by SARS-CoV-2, the 2021 edition of our Workshop had to be postponed to the current year. Thus, we are excited of being together again and sharing the work developed in plant membrane biology during the recent time.
This year, in our 7th workshop in Plant Membrane Biology, we have a program preserving the original spirit of a workshop in which young generations of researchers in plant membrane biology will show and discuss their work with an audience integrated by peers that include senior members. Therefore, our program includes the participation of 13 Ph D students, 3 postdoctoral fellows, 6 junior researchers and 12 senior investigators. They are coming from Chile, Argentina, Mexico, United States of America, Canada and Scotland. They will address topics in structure and mechanisms of sensing and transport of membrane proteins, role of lipids in membrane properties, membrane protein-lipid interactions, components and organization of trafficking pathways and participation of membrane components in hormone responses, environmental signal perception, nutrient acquisition, development, source/sink transport, water relations, genomics and new methods and applications of membrane research in plants.
Besides oral and poster presentations, we have organized special activities for the students and postdoctoral fellows. Those include two workshops regarding “Transitioning into a Postdoctoral Position”, and “Moving into Another Country”. Besides, a former Editor-in-Chief of Plant Physiology will have a chat talk with the students regarding How to Publish. Another activity will be the “flash talks” previous to the poster display.
We are sure that all participants will enjoy this meeting due to the high academic quality of the program, as well as to enjoy the beautiful Yucatan State in Mexico.
