Judging Criteria
The foundation of scoring is quality dancing. Timing, musicality, footwork, technique, partner connection, and execution of movement will be the primary factors considered by the judges. Lifts, dips, inversions, and other visually impressive elements are evaluated within the context of the overall dance and are most effective when they complement the dance as a whole.
The Intermediate Division is intended for dancers who are new to freestyle strictly competition and who dance at an intermediate level. Intermediate dancers have not regularly advanced to semifinals and have not competed in freestyle finals. Furthermore, they have not placed in finals or won dance competitions. Finally, they are not regularly lead teachers at dance classes/workshops, and have never judged a dance competition. This division is designed for dancers who are developing their freestyle fundamentals, technique, timing, and competitive experience, and adding in a flair to their style.
Low and mid-level lifts are permitted. A low or mid-level lift is defined as a controlled movement in which the lifted dancer's body does not rise above the shoulder level of the supporting dancer. Controlled waist-level inversions are permitted. No toss, throw, release, or aerial action are allowed.
Competitors must maintain continuous control and support of their partner at all times. Any drop, loss of support, uncontrolled descent, or incident in which a lifted dancer is not safely supported and returned to the floor may result in immediate disqualification at the sole discretion of the judges and competition officials.
Due to the developmental nature of this division, judges and competition officials may disqualify competitors for any lift, inversion, dip, or partner-assisted movement deemed unsafe, reckless, beyond the intent of the division, or likely to result in injury to themselves, their partner, other competitors, spectators, venue staff, or property.

The Advanced Division is intended for dancers with significant competitive experience and skill. Any dancer who regularly advances to semifinals, regularly competes in finals, has consistently placed in finals, has won any dance competition, or regularly teaches dance classes/workshops, or has judged a dance competition is considered Advanced for the purposes of this event.
High lifts are permitted, including overhead lifts, extended lifts, inversions, and flips. Advanced competitors are permitted greater freedom in lift selection and execution; however, all lifts, inversions, and partner-assisted movements must be performed with control and regard for safety.
A competitor who drops a partner in an uncontrolled manner, resulting in the partner not being safely caught, supported, or guided to the floor, shall be immediately disqualified. Judges and competition officials also reserve the right to disqualify any competitor whose actions create a significant risk of injury to themselves, their partner, other competitors, spectators, venue staff, or property.
