Abstract: One of the most pressing challenges facing human settlements today is the growing depopulation of rural areas, driven by global trends of centralization and urbanization. The continuous migration of young people to urban centers or abroad has resulted in demographic imbalances, threatening the viability and sustainability of rural communities. In this context, place attachment and quality of life play critical roles in addressing youth out-migration and fostering more resilient rural settlements. Given the limited research on the intersection of place attachment, quality of life, and their impact on young rural residents, this study aims to fill this gap, exploring these concepts within the broader framework of systems change in human settlements and global patterns of centralization.
Place attachment refers to the emotional and cognitive connection individuals form with their environment, contributing to a sense of identity, belonging, and affection. This bond encompasses not only attachment to the physical and social context but also a functional dependence on specific living conditions that are difficult to replicate elsewhere. The primary objective of this study is to identify which factors most strongly influence young people to remain in their place of residence, specifically examining the aspects that most strongly tie them to their rural surroundings.
The study, which involved a survey of 299 young individuals living in rural areas of Serbia and Croatia, identified key dimensions of place attachment: place identity, place dependence, and place bonding, with place identity emerging as the most significant factor. Additionally, the study confirmed that both quality of life and socio-demographic characteristics have a considerable impact on place attachment.
These findings offer valuable insights for developing strategies, policies, and initiatives aimed at rural planning and transformation. By better understanding the relationship between place attachment and quality of life, this research contributes to the broader discourse on the transformation of human settlements, especially in rural areas, within the global context of centralization. The results provide a foundation for strengthening sustainability of rural communities, helping them resist the pressures of urbanization that drive demographic and spatial transitions.
