I'm thrilled to bring you a one-on-one with yours truly, me, Nisi Mae! As an interior design maven with a passion for patterns and textures, I sat down to answer some burning questions from our fabulous subscribers. From tips on balancing bold designs to game-changing ways to transform your space, I’m here to spill all the details. Ready to dive in? Let’s get into it!
Nisi Mae: “Bold patterns can really make a statement, but the key is balance. When using vibrant patterns, I like to combine them with more neutral elements to avoid visual overload. For example, if you have a bright patterned rug, you might pair it with solid-colored furniture and throw pillows that complement the rug’s colors. This way, the patterns stand out without dominating the room.”
Nisi Mae: “Textures are fantastic for adding depth and interest to a neutral color palette. When working with neutrals, incorporate a variety of textures—think a plush velvet sofa, a woven jute rug, or textured wall treatments. These elements create visual and tactile contrast, making the space feel rich and dynamic even without vibrant colors.”
Nisi Mae: “Start by choosing a cohesive color palette. Patterns with similar colors can be mixed more easily because they share a common thread. Also, vary the scale of the patterns; for instance, combine a large floral print with smaller geometric patterns. And don’t forget to include some solid pieces to ground the design and prevent it from feeling too chaotic.”
Nisi Mae: “For smaller rooms, use light, neutral colors and subtle patterns to create a sense of openness. Vertical stripes or large-scale patterns on one wall can give the illusion of height. Incorporating mirrors and reflective textures can also help enhance the perception of space by reflecting light and creating a feeling of depth.”
Nisi Mae: “One common mistake is overloading the space with too many conflicting patterns. It’s important to choose patterns that complement each other rather than compete. Another mistake is neglecting texture; a room full of flat surfaces can feel dull. Remember to mix in different materials and textures to add dimension and warmth.”
Nisi Mae: “Certainly! One of my favorite projects was transforming a small, outdated living room into a vibrant, cozy space. We used a bold, geometric rug as the room’s focal point and complemented it with textured throw pillows and a patterned accent wall. The contrast of the rich textures against the dynamic pattern created a welcoming and stylish environment that felt both modern and inviting.”
