Mabon
September 21
Autumnal Equinox
(March 20-22 in the Southern Hemisphere)
Mabon is the second harvest holiday; Lughnassadh was the first. This is a time of reflection of all that has happened in the past year.
The God resigns himself to waning power, and waning influences on Mother Earth...light and dark are in balance; dark is gaining. The Autumn Equinox's theme is that of rest after labor...the harvest has been gathered in, both grain and fruit, yet the Sun ~ though mellower and less fierce than he was ~ is still with us. (Eight Sabbats for Witches, by Janet & Stewart Farrar ©1988)
This is the second harvest festival, a time of rejoicing and thanksgiving, a time on the Earth when, again, night and day are in equal balance....At Mabon, the Wheel turns towards endings, and the light wanes more noticably each day....Now is a time for rest, reflection, and for contemplating anything left undone in the warm season's wake....Spend some time meditating on all you have accomplished in the past months, and write out a list of all you have to be thankful for. Gratitute is a powerful medicine -- keep the list where you can refer to it, if ever you begin to feel a bit "grinchy" during the coming winter. (Simple Wicca, by Michele Morgan ©2000)
