Imbolc
February 2
(August 1 in the Southern Hemisphere)
At Imbolc, the Goddess is the Maiden; the celebration recognizes the return of light, and the coming of Springtime.
Imbolc is the quickening of the year, the first fetal stirrings of the Spring in the womb of Mother Earth. (Eight Sabbats for Witches, by Janet & Stewart Farrar ©1988)
Imbolc is the midwinter Sabbat, and one of the four Greater Sabbats (Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnassadh, and Samhain). The Sabbat is usually devoted to celebrations of lights, poetry, and the overflowing bowl. Another name is Candlemas. (Witchcraft Today ~ Encyclopedia of Wiccan & NeoPagan Traditions, by James R. Lewis ©2001)
Imbolc, also known as the Festival of Brighid ("Breed") marks the return of spring; it is a time for cleansing and purification; for discarding outworn things. (Simple Wicca, by Michele Morgan ©2000)
