Camping with Pack 383
How often does the Pack camp?
Our Pack goes camping 3-4 times per academic year. Campouts are 1-2 nights over a weekend. Webelos and AOLs may have additional camping trips with their den or with SFL SA events. These are optional but a big part of the scouting experience. We aim to vary camping experiences every year to keep the kids engaged and excited for new opportunities. Our Cubmaster and assistant Cubmaster head all camping planning and activities.
Where does the Pack camp?
We have an annual Tent-or-Treat campout in the fall where we decorate tents and have the scouts trick-or-treat from tent to tent. We also camp at various Scouting America camps and parks in the South Florida area such as Camp Elmore in Davie, Camp Sawyer in Big Pine Key, Tree Tops Park, Markham Park, Lion Country Safari and others. Previous indoor camping activities include overnight adventures at Museum of Discovery & Science in Ft. Lauderdale, Kennedy Space Center, and SeaWorld. See the Pack Calendar for this year’s planned camping trips.
Who can go camping?
The whole family! Scout(s), mom, dad, siblings, grandparents, etc. All adults must complete a SYT (Safeguarding our Youth Training Program) and VIRTUS online training to participate. Scouts will need to submit a annual medical form as well as an activity form.
Does my scout have to go camping?
No, but understand that it is a big part of the program. Camping is a lot of fun and much easier as a pack! Our seasoned campers will go out of their way to help make each trip enjoyable for each family. We will hold camping classes before our first trip. This class is to help our first-timers learn what supplies they need, how to put up a tent, and some tips and tricks. We also aim to have various camping options from the traditional outdoor, to glamping, to indoor camping (ex. museums, Kennedy Space Center, SeaWorld). Due to the South Florida climate our outdoor camping events tend to be in the fall and winter months. If a family is not able to stay overnight they may come for the day for camping activities.
Do we need our own tents?
Yes. Each family stays in their own tent along with their scout. Cub scouts are not allowed in any other family’s tent.
What about food?
The camping committee will plan the meals and snacks for an trip and purchase all food and drinks. There is a camping fee for those attending to cover the camping location rental fee, trailer costs, activities, and food. Parents are assigned to a particular meal (called the Duty Roster) in which they help prepare and serve food so everyone pitches in to help. The pack brings the tables, chairs, cooking supplies, and food. You are also welcome to bring any snacks and drinks as well.
