The goal of the Pacific Cascade SfN chapter is to bring together neuroscientists from all career stages from across the whole state of Washington. Chapter members can be individuals, departments, or institutions whose primary goal is advancing neuroscience research or education. We recognize that not all neuroscientists are in a department or research unit called “neuroscience,” so we welcome individual and institutional participation from affiliated fields such as psychology, biology, and beyond.
Read on for benefits and responsibilities of each membership type, including options for allied professionals who do not qualify for SfN membership. Not sure which type of membership is right for you, or need to change your member type in our records? Contact us!
To become a member, just join our email list and be sure to choose the appropriate membership type!
Regular individual members should be researchers, educators, or allied professionals who meet the Society for Neuroscience membership criteria for regular, emeritus, or postdoc membership.
Student individual members should be undergraduate or graduate students who meet the membership criteria for their respective categories.
All individual members should be located in the state of Washington.
Chapter members who are affiliated with an institutional member are encouraged to explore becoming a Chapter Representative for their institution (your institution does not have to be an institutional member for you to be an individual member).
Except for chapter officers and councilors, you do not have to have an active membership with SfN to be a chapter member. Student members are not eligible to be officers or councilors, but may be student Chapter Representative.
There is no cost to be an individual member.

Partner membership is offered to individuals who do not qualify for Society for Neuroscience membership, and therefore do not qualify for regular/student individual membership, but who have a personal or professional interest in neuroscience. For example, eligible Partner members include legal/other professional services departments that support neuroscience research, teachers* of neuroscience who do not otherwise qualify for SfN membership (e.g., high school teachers), and interested community members. Partner membership is subject to a vote of approval by the Officers and Councilors.
Partner members are not eligible to vote in chapter elections, be Officers/Councilors, and for students who are Partner members (i.e., because they do not qualify under SfN student member criteria), apply for travel awards. They enjoy the other benefits of regular individual members.
* Note that this category is intended to cover educators who teach neuroscience, in contrast to those who use neuroscience to inform their general teaching (e.g., growth mindset based learning, neuroscience inspired educational practices, etc.).
Institutional members should be at academic organizations or non-profit research institutions. Members may be at the organizational level or may be departments, research centers, etc.
The chapter offers institutional membership at $500/year. The organization does not receive voting rights but individual members affiliated with the organization do.
Student groups can request institutional membership at no cost (e.g., an undergraduate neuroscience club).
