PMR radios are portable handheld radios used for short-range communications that are toll-free and license-free. They are essential tools for communication in a variety of situations, including outdoor activities, events, construction sites and emergencies.
PMR446 is a standard for wireless communication. This involves license-free, often small transceivers for personal use. The abbreviation PMR stands for Personal Mobile Radio and the addition comes from the frequency on which the transceivers, or walkie-talkies, operate: 446 MHz. The power of the transmitters is a maximum of 0.5 watts; the range in the open field is therefore 10 kilometers in optimal conditions. In areas full of trees or buildings, this distance quickly decreases to a maximum of one kilometer. In built-up areas, the range is often no more than 500 meters. Walkie-talkies for PMR446 are available via numerous channels (electronics stores, large supermarkets, via the internet). The more expensive sets have CTCSS, which means that different groups of users who work on the same frequency have less interference with each other, because they do not hear each other's transmissions unless users from different groups speak at the same time and they are not far apart Although PMR446 is license-free in most European Union countries, in the United States the frequency on which the equipment operates has been issued to radio amateurs by the FCC, so the equipment may only be used by radio amateurs there.
