Neck pain is a very common issue in society today. Understanding the causes and prevention can lead to a healthier neck and pain-free life. Some of the most common causes of neck pain that we see are:
Upper Cross Syndrome
Neck Sprain/Strain (Whiplash)
Muscular Tightness/Imbalances
Disc Pain
Cervical Radiculopathy
Desk Ergonomics/Postural
Back pain can be caused by a variety of factors and can dramatically affect every day life. Back pain can be seen in any area of the back, and at P3, we strive to provide relief for that pain.
Upper to mid back pain affects the area of the spine that provides stability. Because of this, conditions such as herniated discs are not typical, but can still occur in certain instances. The majority of pain that occurs in this area is usually muscular or joint dysfunction.
Low back pain can result from muscular or joint dysfunction as well, but can also be due to injury, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, compression fractures, and nerve root compression. We can also experience low back pain due to hip or pelvic dysfunction.
Back pain is complex, and can lead to extremity pain, especially in the hips and shoulders. In general, our society sits a lot and uses electronics every day. That can have a negative effect on posture, which in turn can lead to shoulder pain. Shoulder pain can also be localized to the shoulder due to injury, lack of mobility, or muscular dysfunction.
There are many types of headaches we experience throughout our lives. Regardless of the type or source, they can be debilitating and prevent us from our usual daily activities. The most common headaches we treat are migraine, tension, and post-traumatic.
Vertigo can be a debilitating health issue and can be triggered due to infection, headaches, underlying health concern, or head position. The most common type is peripheral vertigo, where your inner ear and equilibrium are affected.
Whether you are weekend warrior or professional athlete, we all can experience a sports injury at some point in our lives. They occur for a variety of reasons, but the ultimate end goal is to get out of pain faster and restore motion so we can return to those sports. At P3, we are a sports-minded clinic that focuses on functional treatments to identify and treat any muscular or joint imbalances that may be happening that led to injury. We offer a variety of treatments to use in combination with one another to get you back on your feet in no time.
As we age, we can start experiencing pain in different joints in our body, like our knees, ankles, hips, and shoulders. Knee pain can occur due to previous injury, arthritis, or current exercise. Our knees are considered secondary joints in our lower extremity, where forces are transferred from our feet to our hips. When there is dysfunction in the chain, it can create issues at the knee regardless if the knee is the true culprit or not.
Sciatica is a condition affecting the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is composed of multiple nerve roots that travel from the low back to the hip and leg. Pain is typically felt in the glute or leg, but that can come from an "upstream" injury to the nerve root or disc in your low back. You can also experience numbness or tingling along the nerve pathway and associated muscle weakness.
A herniated disc is an injury to the "cushion" between the bones of your spine. Your discs are comprised of two sections: an outer, fibrous layer (the annulus) and an inner jelly-like layer (the nucleus). A herniation occurs when the nucleus pushes out through a tear in the annulus. These most often occur in the low back, but can occur anywhere in the spine. Some people experience no symptoms at all, but some include arm or leg pain, arm or leg numbness and tingling, and muscular weakness.
The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are on each side of the jaw. People who have TMJ pain have what is called temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). The 3 main areas of TMD are:
Pain in the joint itself,
Pain in the surrounding muscles
Headaches associated with TMD.
Identifying which of these categories your TMJ pain is in helps direct what type of treatment is best.
