Bilingualism

Bilingualism has become an essential part of our globalized world. One of the most intriguing questions concerning the phenomenon of bilingualism is how the human brain manages to keep languages separated. Our lab focuses on  theoretical issues regarding the representation of multiple languages in the bilingual brain. We also investigate the cognitive implications of second language acquisition in educational contexts such as immersion education. Moreover, we study whether bilingualism can be considered as a risk factor for developmental language and learning disorders such as dyslexia.

Language pathologies

We are further interested in the more clinical aspects of language development. For instance, we investigate to which extent human memory functions may be the focus of impairments leading to written language disorders such as dyslexia. We also aim at gaining a better understanding of the cognitive risk factors of dyslexia, dyscalculia, and their frequent comorbidity. Finally, we work on the manifestation of speech pathology in the bilingual brain such as bilingual aphasia.

Language Acquisition

Language is essential and unique to humanity, and the development of human language has fascinated scientists for centuries. In our research lab, we are thriving to understand the development of spoken and written language skills in children and/or compared with adults.  We try to understand this from a memory perspective. Our theoretical framework proposes implicit serial-order memory as a core cognitive function underlying a variety of complex human skills such as language. We also study potential inverse relationships between language and memory, such as how literacy skills further shape our memory capacities.
