Applied ethics - Ethics Bowl (PI 089), Fall 2024
This course will prepare a team to participate in the California region Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl in November/December. The Ethics Bowl provides students with the opportunity to discuss and work towards solving complex ethical issues in a team setting. The course will be structured around the ∼15 case studies we receive, and consist of learning argumentative tools in ethics, researching and analyzing the case studies, and discussion practice in the lead-up to the tournament. During the tournament we will present & defend our analyses and engage with the analyses of other teams.
Bioethics (PI/HPS 183), Fall 2023, 2024
A survey of issues in bioethics. Topics may include: abortion and reproductive rights; euthanasia; physician-patient relationship; use of human embryos and stem cells in research; use of human subjects in research and the concept of informed consent; research on and treatment of non-human animals; organ transplantation, distribution and sale; genetic modification of organisms (including humans); synthetic biology; cure vs. enhancement and other issues in biotechnology and neuroethics.

Topics may include reproductive ethics, research on human subjects, animal research and treatment, justice and health care, physician-patient relationships, death and the end of life, and genetic engineering.
