NJROTC is an educational program and an elective course. Students do not incur any military obligation.
NJROTC teaches self-discipline, self-confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills to help young men and women successfully meet life's challenges.
YES! Participation in NJROTC gets you 1 PE credit and 1 Fine Arts credit which is required to graduate.
See your school counselor and have them add you to NJROTC.
NJROTC cadets are provided with uniforms, books, training aids, and other equipment at no cost. An enrollment fee of $75.00 is for:
Ditty bag for “Rooks” (shoe polish, dressing, etc.)
Name tag.
Travel fees for select field trips (buses, meals, etc.)
Oviedo NJROTC “Lead by Example” shirt.
OHS NJROTC Polo Shirt.
NJROTC encourages participation on competition drill teams, color guard, academics, and physical fitness. Students will also have opportunities to plan and participate in community service events, field trips, camp outs, tours, and attend school functions as a unit (football games, other athletic events, homecoming parades, and a military ball among other activities).
Students may enroll for one year or all four. The more you participate, the more you'll get out of it! First year students are encouraged to participate in unit activities in order to prepare themselves for leadership roles. Upper class cadets are given opportunities to assume positions of increasing responsibility in the administration and command of the unit. The instructors and the cadet staff are prepared to help any of our students in any aspect of the program, whether academic, military, or physical readiness.
Yes, all cadets are required to wear the issued uniform for the entire school day once a week on the designated day. You must be in your uniform on inspection day. You will be inspected to ensure uniform is clean, complete and properly worn. Uniform inspections are graded, and become a part of your overall grade. Some NJROTC field trips also require uniforms.
If you are absent on the designated uniform inspection day, you must wear your uniform the next academic day to receive full credit for your uniform grade. Points are deducted for each day until you're inspected. Failure to makeup the uniform inspection before the next inspection day results in a final grade of zero for the missed inspection.
No, the complete uniform is issued to each cadet at no cost and must be returned upon dis-enrollment/graduation. Uniforms are only issued to the cadets after being professionally dry-cleaned. They must be returned professionally dry-cleaned to NJROTC or you will be charged $35.00 for dry cleaning. All issued clothing/gear must be returned or the student will be billed for the items.
When wearing the NJROTC uniform, all male cadets will need to comply with grooming standards that include haircuts limiting length and thickness. Beards are not allowed. All female cadets will need to follow grooming standards that includes keeping the hair off of the collar. Unusual hair color or styles are not allowed.
All NJROTC teams are co-curricular, therefore not required. However, team participation does increase self discipline, leadership opportunities, and a sense of esprit-de-corps. The most successful cadets, in terms of leadership and scholarship potential, are members of one or more NJROTC teams.
Cadets presenting evidence of successful completion of at least 3 years of NJROTC are entitled to advanced promotion to pay grade E-3 upon initial enlistment in an active or reserve component of the Army, Navy, or Air Force and pay grade E-2 in the Marine Corps.
The Senior Naval Science Instructor is authorized to nominate a maximum of six eligible cadets for the Naval Academy and three for West Point and Air Force academies each year.
