If you are an educator looking for resources to support current or future inclusion of systems thinking (ST) in your teaching, then you probably already have some unique, individual views concerning the potential challenges and rewards inherent in the development/implementation of curricular changes.
We are here to help! As a community of educators who understand the value of a systems thinking approach to teaching chemistry, we have curated a list of potential “challenges” on the following pages.
In each case, we provide guidance to help you look beyond these challenges and focus on practical strategies to overcome them, along with the enhanced learning outcomes resulting from applying a systems thinking approach.
We found common strategies at the individual level, team/collaborative level, and institutional/community level that can help one overcome challenges related to systems thinking. Check them out in the figure below!
We organized the types of educator and educational ST challenges (including student challenges) based on four categories: (1) educator profile, (2) contextual factors, (3) educator attitudes, and (4) educator experience.
These four categories align with the teacher-centered systemic reform model, which is an educational change model that can be used to understand the interconnectedness of these challenges and guide future actions to mitigate barriers of STICE (Woodbury and Gess-Newsome, 2002).
