In 2016 Artist Mimsy created a series called ‘Isis in Slyvania’ and was subsequently met with security risk exhibiting her work due to the “potentially inflammatory content” due to the theme of Islamic extremism.
Inspired by her piece I created a tableaux of a similar theme portraying the exclusion of girls and women from education in Afghanistan. Miniature burqas made from linen and cotton with tiny cotton lace veils adorn Slyvanian Family animal dolls depicted in a school setting. Chairs and tables are over turned and tiny books lay strewn along the floor while female teachers and their children look on in bemused horror that their education is now at an end. The right to teach and the right to learn dissolved by the Taliban.
