When is the middle school lacrosse season?
The lacrosse season typically starts with practices in early February, with games starting in early March. The regular season ends in late April/early May, with playoffs typically going for another 1-2 weeks, so the season is done before the school year ends.
When and where does the team practice?
The team typically practices from about 4:15-5:45 Monday through Thursday during the season at West End Middle School. Players who attend other schools are responsible for finding transportation (but many parents carpool). Early in the season the sun goes down early, so practices will end around 5:15. We may also have some practices on Saturdays early in the season to get in extra reps.
When and where are the games usually played?
Games are played on either week days (usually no earlier than 5:30) or Saturdays. Home games are either played at West End Middle School or Hillsboro High School, and away games can be as close as west Nashville or as far away as Cookeville, TN or Huntsville, AL (we do not travel to either/both locations every year).
Can my kid play if they don't go to West End Middle School?
Yes! You can play with the Outlaws if you attend any area school and your school doesn't have a lacrosse team. While most of our players come from either West End or JT Moore, we have also had players from Meigs, Rose Park, MLK, Lipscomb Academy, Percy Priest Elementary, and Sylvan Park (5th grade only). Lacrosse is not sanctioned at the middle school level, so the rules on participation are different from other MNPS sports.
What does it mean that middle school lacrosse isn't a "sanctioned" sport?
It just means that the Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association (TMSAA, an affiliate organization of TSSAA) does not have as much control over how the sport is organized and run at this level. Most area teams are clubs that are run by parents and volunteers and have to provide their own funding, hire their own coaches, schedule their own games, and pay for their own equipment and other costs. We do not get funding from our schools or MNPS. At the high school level lacrosse became a sanctioned sport starting with the 2025 season.
How much does it cost?
Annual player fees are $300 for players in grades 6-8, and $100 for players in grade 5. Each player will also need to join USA Lacrosse, as this provides our team with insurance coverage, and that membership costs approximately $35. However, we don't want cost to be an impediment for anyone, so we offer financial assistance. Please speak to a member of the team's board about this if you are interested.
What do the dues pay for?
Dues cover the cost for coaches, equipment provided to all players, balls (lots of lacrosse balls!), referees for games, and other costs to keep the team running.
Do I need to buy a bunch of equipment? What if my kid doesn't like it?
No, you don't need to buy equipment. We have all of the equipment a beginning player will need. If your player enjoys the game, we would ask that you buy your own equipment going forward so we can make our limited resources go further. Affordable equipment can be found at local stores like Play It Again Sports, Dicks, and Academy. Also, see the link below for information on NOCSAE-approved equipment. A list of all required equipment can be found on the Rules section of our website.
Is it safe?
All sports involve some degree of risk. Lacrosse has taken steps to ensure the safety of players, such as requiring equipment that is certified by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE). Lacrosse is no more dangerous than any other school sport. Please click here for information on NOCSAE-approved equipment.
Is your organization legit?
Yes, Metro Outlaws is a 501(c)3 non-profit in the state of Tennessee.
Do you have insurance?
Yes. All players and coaches are required to be members of USA Lacrosse, which provides insurance for injuries.
Where do players go after this?
If a player is enrolled in MNPS in high school, and they attend either Hillsboro High School or Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet, they can play for Hillsboro High School. Hillsboro has a long tradition of winning, having claimed their second state championship (and the first officially TSSAA sanctioned one) in 2025. Many Hillsboro players have also gone on to play in college.
