Leadership

Co-Creators Rio Villa Ezell and Jay Jay Maniquis

Rio Villa Ezell is a Filipina-American born and raised in San Diego, the unceded lands of the Kumeyaay. She is a theatre artist and writer, which fostered her creativity and empathy. Growing up, she often traveled to the Philippines and attended Filipino community events, showing her how documentation and discussion of history and culture are crucial to self-development, especially for communities affected by immigration and colonization. She is thankful for the Asian-American creativity and strength that paved the way for this series.

Jay Jay Maniquis is a native San Diegan and Filipino-American who has hosted for TFC, the most-watched Filipino Channel in the world. His mother was born in Cabuyao, Philippines, and his Dad in Quezon City, Philippines. Jay Jay feels that it is important to learn about your roots and heritage. You may have seen Jay Jay on Youtube on his Travel Channel called “Jaycation” where he focuses on travel, food, and culture in cities like San Diego, Las Vegas, Barcelona, and Manila! He grew up idolizing the likes of Chef Anthony Bourdain and TV Host Rick Steves.

Meet the crew

Director and Editor - Will Ezell

William Ezell is Thai-American and has lived in numerous places around the world but has called San Diego home for several years now. His mixed heritage gives him an incredible love for both his Asian and stateside traditions and origins. Will served in the U.S. Army for 8 years. After returning from his time in the service, he pursued his longtime love of film and television. He graduated with a degree in Film and Television Production and learned from many of San Diego’s best filmmakers and producers like Cy Kuckenbaker, Jodi Cilley, and Robert Sly. His experiences overseas, his travels, and his life have contributed greatly to his cinematic visions. Will formed a full-service video production company called Fearless Few Productions, a veteran-owned and operated company that covers everything from concept to finished product for video, film, and television. He lives by his motto: “I’ve spent my life collecting experiences for the stories I intend to tell someday.”
