From an idea to a TV series
Documenting Fil-Am creatives
Documenting Fil-Am creatives
This project started in 2019 at a table of artists and community leaders. The conversation was around the question: How can we support and highlight Filipino-American artists and creatives?
While the project began as an idea for a digital platform accessible to those in San Diego and beyond, we learned about the call for project proposals for KPBS's Explore San Diego Program.
The project then shifted towards documenting and paying homage to the artists in our community to educate viewers on Filipino culture and inspire future creatives. Representation is extremely powerful in developing the identities and paths of young people.
While art and creativity has been a part of Filipino culture for millennia, modern role models are often those in non-creative industries. However, the artists tell the Filipino story and document it.
COVID slowed down our project like many others, so the time gap between our pilot segment and the rest of the season's interviews is about one and a half years. The premiere episode airs almost exactly 3 years later after the initial meeting of creators.
We are now onto Season 2! We successfully filmed all 12 interviews with April 2023, and the season will air in October 2023 to honor Filipino American History Month.
The project plans to continue, so if you are an artist of Filipino descent or want to send us an artist you recommend, please reach out.
