PRESS RELEASE - UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA, AAUP--JUNE 19, 2025
'On June 17, 2025, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled in the case of BERT v. Drummond, in which the University of Oklahoma Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (OU-AAUP) is a plaintiff...that the higher education gender and race provisions of Oklahoma HB 1775 do not apply to public higher education in Oklahoma, including at The University of Oklahoma (OU)."
'From the very outset, Oklahoma House Bill 1775 (HB 1775), due to its vagueness, was a deliberate attempt to censor scientifically based coverage of race and gender topics taught in OU and public college and university classrooms throughout Oklahoma. This attempt to censor classroom discussion ran contrary to the 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure, as well as the 1970 Interpretive Comments of the American Association of University Professors, which the OU Board of Regents has officially adopted in the OU Faculty Handbook. '
'OU-AAUP is sponsoring a virtual talk on Friday, September 12 at 10 AM, by Professor Isaac Kamala, on the right-wing effort to remake American higher education, including immediately at OU and how we can mobilize, organize, and fight back.'
