Place

  • Place is defined as a form of bounded space with a specific meaning or significance attached (1).

  • In the early 19th century Time Square had served as a residential area as well as an area of business.

  • It was not a desirable area at the time which made it cheap and prime real estate. This was due to the sheer number of saloons and brothels in the area, numbering in the 130's each within the ten-street-span of 37th to 47th St. (2)

  • Furthermore, the industrial buildings that surrounded the area made it a common area for immigrant workers who were looked down on at the time.

  • The New York Times Newspaper had bought (and eventually outgrew) space in the newly constructed Times Building located on Time Square, formerly Longacre (3).

  • The Times created tradition of the giant ball drop we are all familiar with today and this served as reason for people to gather for the celebration of the new year and the tradition has stood.

  • Since then, Time Square serves as a place of social interaction for people all over the world to come and visit.

  • Monitarily Time Square produces fifteen percent of all the city's economic output with the attractions such as the Theater District. These millions are produced within a tenth of all of New York City's land composition.

  • As for current-day Time Square, navigating the COVID-19 pandemic has been a large issue as New York and New York City specifically, have recieved very high infection numbers. The businesses in the area have suffered largely and industries such as hotels are closing down. Hotels such as the Hilton have closed their doors as early as October and with no certainty in the next six-month stretch, it will be interesting to see how other businesses fair (4).

  • Especially interesting will be to see what city officials have planned for the famous "ball-drop" and how they plan to keep citizens safe and engaged while keeping businesses open. A tough path to navigate, indeed.

The Red Steps

In the last 20 years Time Square's tourist attractions have boomed. In 2008 one, Tom Harris had joined a division of workers known as the Alliance who worked in order to improve Time Square in terms of its public saftey among other responsibilities. He was interviewed by The New York Leadership Center, Coro. When asked how the square has changed since his arrival, he was quoted as saying, "...The Red Steps were another transformative addition that came shorthly after I joined... They're so iconic now that its hard to imagine a time when they weren't there." (5) As seen to the right, the iconic Red Steps in the center of the madness allow for people watching, one of the most notable attractions to take part in Time Square.
