Summer Driver's ed update...

I want to share the most up-to-date information on the summer driver education program. Given the current situation and directives from both the Governor and ISBE, please note the following procedures for the students and families:


Students that were scheduled to take Summer Driver Education:

  • Summer driver education classroom instruction is canceled.
  • Refunds will be issued by June 30, 2020.
  • Students should contact their counselor to enroll in driver education for the upcoming school year.
  • Students will begin the permit process again the semester they are enrolled for Driver Education.


Students that are enrolled in Spring Driver Education:

  • Behind-the-wheel summer driver education instruction is pending approval from the State.
  • Only students that passed the classroom portion and were enrolled in the spring semester will be eligible to complete the behind-the-wheel requirements of driver education this summer.
  • Start date is yet to be determined, again pending approval.

Drivers Education Fee:$175.00 checks made to Ottawa Township High School are past due. Please turn into the main office.

$20.00 cash or Check made to the Sec. of State. (Permit Fee)

Classroom Rules:

  • Attendance is mandatory. An accumulation of three absences during the nine week classroom/simulators may result in the removal from the class. The state of Illinois has set marks for the number of classroom and behind the wheel hours of instruction. You must be in attendance to meet these hours.
  • No eating or drinking in the class (water is okay)
  • Gum is allowed, however no bubbles or popping.
  • Treat everyone and equipment with respect.
  • No talking, swearing, horseplay, or fighting or you may be removed from class
  • No sleeping
  • No restroom breaks unless it is an emergency.
  • No cheating. If you are caught you will receive a zero on the test or assignment and sent to 201.
  • Pencils, notebooks, and textbook are required daily.
  • All student handbook rules will be enforced.

**The classroom portion of the Drivers Education class counts toward the students overall GPA

Behind the Wheel Rules:

  • Attendance is mandatory for all 12 you are assigned to drive.
  • Permits are required everyday you drive. If you forget your permit, it will count as a missed day.
  • Proper shoes and clothing are required as well as glasses or contacts if you wear them. Not having them will result in a missed day.
  • No Baggy clothes, sandals, flip flops or sunglasses in the car.
  • If you act, look or smell like you are under the influence of drugs you will we dropped immediately and lose your permit. This is a safety issue.
  • All student handbook rules will be enforced in the car.

**The lab portion of the Drivers Education class does not count toward the students overall GPA

Grading Scale and Grading Information:

A= 100-90 B=89-80 C= 79-70 D=69-60 F= 59 & Lower

  • The classroom and lab are two separate grades.
  • D’s and F’s are failing grades in the lab.
  • The lab has 11 daily grades and a six mile final test.
  • If your daily grade average is passing and you fail the six mile test, you must repeat the six mile test. This will be arranged by one of the instructors.
  • If you fail the daily grade on average but pass the six mile test, it will be up to the discretion of the driving instructor whether you pass or not.
  • If you fail the daily grade on average and fail the six mile test, you must repeat the lab portion of the class. This will only be offered in the summer.
  • If you earn an average grade of an A or B in the classroom, lab and six mile test, you will qualify for the cooperative drivers testing program (co-op.) If you qualify, you may not have to take the state test to get your license. If your birthday is on a spot check day, you will have to take the state driving test.

Make-Up Work:

You will have four days to make up work, after the four day you will receive a zero. See your instructor before or after class to get materials and missed assignments.

Tardy: Five minutes or less

1st – Warning

2nd – Teacher detention

3rd – School Detention and parent contact

4th – Possible removal from class

Discipline Issues

1st – Warning

2nd – Teacher detention & seat moved

3rd – Detention & loss of class time

4th – Removed from class
